Ajnala: In a significant legal development on Thursday, April 23, 2026, a court in Ajnala has sent Khadoor Sahib MP and “Waris Punjab De” chief Amritpal Singh to two-day police remand. The hearing was conducted through video conferencing from Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, where Singh remains lodged. The formal arrest and subsequent remand proceed as his preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA) expired on April 22. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently permitted the state government to conduct all trial and remand proceedings virtually, citing exceptional security concerns and the risk of a law-and-order breakdown if Singh were physically transported to Amritsar.
During the proceedings, the Punjab Police sought a 15-day remand, arguing that custodial interrogation was necessary to recover the vehicle used by Singh and his supporters to carry the Sri Guru Granth Sahib during the storming of the Ajnala police station in February 2023. However, Singh’s legal counsel strongly opposed the request, labeling the grounds for such a long remand as “ridiculous” and unnecessary. After hearing both sides, the court limited the police custody to two days. Singh is scheduled to be produced before the court again on Saturday upon the completion of this initial remand period.
The Ajnala case dates back to February 23, 2023, when a mob led by Amritpal Singh allegedly attacked the police station to protest the arrest of their associate, Lovepreet Singh Toofan. The incident resulted in clashes with police personnel and led to the registration of an FIR against 41 individuals, including Singh, on charges of attempt to murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy. While nine of his associates were shifted back to Punjab jails last year, the state has successfully argued for Singh’s continued incarceration in Assam, citing his role as the prime conspirator in the 2023 incident and a subsequent 2024 murder case.
