Akal Takht Summons Chief Khalsa Diwan Executive Committee Over Membership Code Violations

Amritsar: The Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has issued a significant directive summoning the entire executive committee of the Chief Khalsa Diwan Charitable Society to appear in person on May 8, 2026. The committee members are required to present themselves at 10:00 AM following formal written complaints regarding the religious credentials of the society’s administrative leadership. Specifically, the allegations suggest that several members of the management committee do not adhere to the mandatory requirement of being Amritdhari (baptized) Sikhs, which is a central tenet for leadership within such a prominent Panthic institution.

This recent escalation follows an administrative inquiry initiated in January of this year. Under previous correspondence, the Akal Takht had directed the Diwan to provide a comprehensive list clarifying the status of all members as either Amritdhari or non-Amritdhari. Despite the passage of several months, the society reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory response or a validated list to the highest temporal seat of the Sikh faith. The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has taken a serious view of this continued non-compliance and the fresh complaints received, leading to the order for a personal appearance.

The upcoming meeting is expected to address these concerns of Maryada (Sikh code of conduct) within the prestigious organization. As one of the oldest and most respected educational and charitable bodies in the Sikh community, the allegations of management discrepancies have sparked significant discussion among the global Sikh diaspora. The executive committee will now be required to explain their position and the reasons for the delays in reporting to the Secretariat. Observers believe that the meeting on May 8 could result in major decisions regarding the future governance of the society and the enforcement of religious standards for its administrative members.
