Amritsar: The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, issued a strong condemnation following provocative online remarks by a Dehradun-based individual threatening to repeat the tragic events of June 1984 against the Sikh community. Characterizing the statements as a direct assault on communal harmony and national unity, the top temporal leader demanded that the Uttarakhand administration initiate immediate criminal proceedings against the perpetrator. The religious head warned that such malicious rhetoric devalues the massive historical contributions and sacrifices made by Sikhs during India’s freedom struggle, highlighting that failure to contain such elements could lead to serious public consequences.
The modern controversy comes amid a backdrop of escalating regional friction following the mid-June parking dispute in Karnaprayag and the subsequent border standoff at Paonta Sahib. The Jathedar pointed out that certain fringe groups have repeatedly attempted to communalize ordinary local altercations, turning them into systematic campaigns that question the community’s fundamental right to wear their mandatory religious symbols, the Five Kakaars. He noted with grave concern that Sikh pilgrims and Punjabi travellers heading toward prominent Himalayan shrines have increasingly faced targeted harassment regarding their traditional attire, creating a climate of severe vulnerability across the interstate corridors.
Faced with these safety concerns, the Akal Takht leadership has delivered a firm warning to the Uttarakhand state government, underscoring that ensuring the absolute security of visiting pilgrims remains the legal obligation of the host administration. The Jathedar cautioned that if state authorities continue to exhibit a lenient approach toward those inciting religious division, the Sikh community would be forced to reconsider the safety of future travel and pilgrimage routes into the state. To ensure legal accountability, he directed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to immediately file a formal police complaint in Amritsar to ensure the instigator faces swift criminal prosecution for hate speech and disrupting public peace.
