PATIALA — A pall of grief has descended over Atla village near Patiala following news that a 24-year-old Punjabi youth, Khushkarandeep Singh, was allegedly shot dead in California, United States.

Khushkarandeep had moved to the United States approximately five years ago in search of better economic opportunities and was employed as a commercial truck driver to support his family back home. According to his relatives, communication was abruptly lost after July 30, when his mobile phone became completely unreachable. Following growing concerns, family members lodged formal complaints, prompting local law enforcement authorities in California to initiate a search operation. His body was subsequently discovered in a nearby wooded area.

Preliminary findings by American law enforcement suggest that Khushkarandeep was targeted and shot while traveling inside his vehicle. While local detectives continue their investigation to determine the motive and apprehend those responsible, members of the North American Punjabi diaspora have initiated fundraising efforts to support legal procedures and assist with logistics. Back home in Patiala, the victim’s grieving family, including his father Balwinder Singh, has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Government of India for swift diplomatic intervention to facilitate the repatriation of his mortal remains for last rites in his native village.
