Jalandhar: Signs of growing unease within the Punjab Congress have come to the fore after a section of senior leaders, led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, expressed dissatisfaction over recent organisational developments ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
A meeting attended by several Congress functionaries was held at Channi’s residence in Morinda, where participants reportedly discussed concerns regarding the party’s current direction and recent appointments. Those present are understood to have agreed to seek an audience with the central leadership to place their views before them.
According to party insiders, Channi’s camp intends to approach the Congress high command within the next few days, hoping for a detailed discussion on issues affecting the organisation in Punjab. Leaders close to the former Chief Minister maintained that their objective is to strengthen the party by ensuring that the concerns of grassroots workers are heard.
Central Leadership Steps In
Sources indicated that after reports of the Morinda meeting reached New Delhi, a senior Congress leader contacted Channi and urged restraint. The leadership is believed to have assured him that a meeting with Rahul Gandhi would be arranged after his return from an overseas visit. Party sources also suggest that Punjab affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel could visit the state soon to engage with local leaders and address the emerging differences.
No Open Rebellion, But Clear Message
Although the gathering generated considerable political speculation, no formal announcement challenging the party leadership was made. Channi refrained from making any public statement against the Congress high command, indicating that the exercise was aimed more at conveying dissatisfaction than triggering a split.
