What’s Next For Tamil Nadu? Vijay’s TVK Leads Race but Lacks Numbers to Form Government Alone

Tamil Nadu: The 2026 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu has produced an uncertain political landscape, with actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the largest force but falling short of a clear majority.

Out of the 234 seats in the Assembly, TVK secured 107—just shy of the 118 required to form a government on its own. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance followed with 74 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance managed 53 seats. The outcome has resulted in a fractured mandate, opening the door to intense political negotiations.

With no party commanding a majority, attention has shifted to possible alliances. One likely route for TVK could involve reaching out to smaller parties that were part of the DMK coalition, including the Indian National Congress and Left parties like the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist). Support from these groups could help Vijay cross the majority mark.

Another scenario being discussed is outside backing from the DMK alliance itself, which would allow TVK to form the government without triggering large-scale defections. However, senior DMK leaders, including Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, have so far refrained from committing to any such move, stating that the party will carefully assess the situation.

Speculation around the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has also surfaced, though initial statements from its leaders suggest reluctance to support TVK. Meanwhile, TVK strategists have indicated that aligning with the BJP or its allies is not an option, effectively ruling out cooperation with the NDA bloc.

The election marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political narrative, breaking decades of dominance by the DMK and AIADMK. TVK’s strong debut has positioned it as a serious contender for power, but the final outcome will depend on post-election bargaining.

As the single-largest party, TVK is expected to stake its claim to form the government. Whether Vijay can secure the numbers needed to take charge as chief minister will likely be decided in the coming days through crucial political negotiations.
