Weather Alert Issued for Punjab: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Expected in Next Few Hours

Chandigarh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent weather advisory for large parts of Punjab and the Tricity region, warning of intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next 2 to 3 hours.

The alert includes Chandigarh, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Panchkula, where heavy downpours and lightning activity are likely to occur shortly. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, avoid open areas, and secure loose items around their homes as a precautionary measure.

According to the latest forecast, severe weather conditions are expected in several districts, particularly:

  • Heavy Rain & Thunderstorms: Lehra, Sunam, Sangrur, Dhuri, Malerkotla, Moonak, Patran, Samana, Patiala, Nabha, Rajpura, Dera Bassi, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amloh, Mohali, Khanna, Payal, Kharar, Khamanon, Chamkaur Sahib, Samrala, and Rupnagar.

  • Moderate Rain & Lightning: Sardulgarh, Budhlada, Mansa, Barnala, Tapa, Ludhiana East and West, Phillaur, Balachaur, Nawanshahr, Anandpur Sahib, Garhshankar, Nangal, and surrounding areas.

  • Light Rain Likely: Moga, Nihal Singhwala, Talwandi Sabo, Rampura Phul, Nakodar, Phagwara, Hoshiarpur, and parts of Ludhiana and Bathinda districts.

Authorities across affected regions have been asked to remain on high alert. Urban local bodies are preparing to manage potential waterlogging, while rural areas have been warned of localized flooding due to runoff from continuous rain.

Residents are urged to:

  • Avoid travel unless necessary

  • Stay away from trees, poles, and open fields during lightning activity

  • Follow updates from local administration and meteorological officials
