Lucknow: In a festive gesture ahead of Diwali, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved a hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for its employees and pensioners, increasing the rate from 55% to 58%. The revised rates will be implemented with effect from July 1, 2025.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath via social media, where he described the move as a step toward enhancing the economic well-being of lakhs of government personnel and retirees across the state.

“This decision,” the Chief Minister noted, “will brighten the lives of approximately 28 lakh employees, pensioners, and their families. It symbolizes not just monetary relief, but also our commitment to their welfare during the auspicious festival of Deepavali.”

The enhancement in DA and DR comes at a time when inflationary pressures have impacted household budgets. The hike is expected to offer some respite, especially during the festive season, by increasing the take-home pay of active government staff and boosting pension payouts.

Government sources confirmed that the financial adjustment would benefit both serving employees under various departments and retirees who rely on their pensions for daily sustenance. The announcement is seen as part of the government’s broader effort to maintain parity with central government compensation standards and ensure public sector morale remains high.

The updated allowance rates will reflect in the upcoming salary and pension disbursements, bringing festive cheer to lakhs of homes just ahead of Diwali.

This is the second such increment in the current financial year and aligns with the biannual practice of revising DA and DR based on inflation trends and cost-of-living metrics.

Public Reaction

The move has been welcomed by employee unions and pensioners’ associations, who had been pressing for an upward revision to help offset rising living expenses.

“This increment may seem modest on paper, but it translates into a meaningful boost for many families struggling with everyday costs,” said R.P. Verma, a retired government officer and member of the Uttar Pradesh Pensioners’ Association.

As festivities approach, the government’s timely announcement is being viewed not just as an administrative adjustment but as a symbolic gesture of goodwill and solidarity with its workforce.
