New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday formally recognised a significant political milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing the tenure record held by Jawaharlal Nehru.

During a Cabinet meeting held at Sewa Teerth, ministers greeted the occasion with a standing ovation and adopted a resolution commending Modi’s leadership and uninterrupted tenure across three successive mandates.

Prime Minister Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the general elections. As of June 10, 2026, he has completed 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, edging past Nehru’s 4,398-day tenure that ran from May 1952 to May 1964.

According to sources, the resolution described the achievement as particularly noteworthy in a country as vast and diverse as India, where governance involves addressing the needs and aspirations of more than 1.4 billion citizens spread across varied linguistic, cultural and geographical backgrounds.

The Cabinet also highlighted the continuity of leadership witnessed during the past decade. It noted that while several nations have experienced political instability, frequent leadership changes and shifting policy directions, India has maintained a consistent governance framework under Modi’s leadership. The resolution attributed this continuity to repeated public endorsement through three consecutive national election victories.

The document further referred to international recognition received by the Prime Minister, stating that he has consistently featured among the world’s most popular democratic leaders in various global surveys. It also noted that he has been awarded the highest civilian honours by over 30 countries.

Emphasising Modi’s personal journey, the resolution described his rise from a modest socio-economic background to the country’s highest elected office as a reflection of the strength and inclusiveness of India’s democratic system. It underlined that his political ascent was achieved without the backing of a family-based political legacy.

The Cabinet resolution also cited key developments during his years in office. These included the expansion of digital governance platforms, major investments in infrastructure, improvements in welfare delivery mechanisms and broader socio-economic progress. It further pointed to estimates indicating that nearly 250 million people moved out of multidimensional poverty during this period.

On the global stage, the resolution stated that India has enhanced its standing as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, secured important trade partnerships and strengthened its influence in discussions on development, technology, climate action and issues concerning the Global South.

The Cabinet concluded by describing the milestone as a reflection of sustained public confidence in democratic governance and India’s evolving role on the international stage.
