Etah: A festive journey home turned into a tragedy for three men when their motorcycle was struck by an unknown vehicle late Saturday night in the Malavan area of Etah district. Two of them were killed on the spot, while the third remains in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
The accident occurred near Aspur village as the trio was returning from Gurugram to their hometowns for Diwali celebrations. According to Malavan Station House Officer (SHO) Rohit Rathi, the victims were traveling together on a motorcycle when they were hit by a vehicle that fled the scene. The impact caused them to lose control and crash on the road.
Anuj (50), a native of Hardoi, and Abhishek Maurya (55), from Raniyan in Mau district, died instantly due to severe injuries. The third rider, Sanjay, sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Avantibai Medical College in Etah.
Police were alerted by bystanders who witnessed the accident. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the victims to the hospital. Despite efforts to save them, doctors declared Anuj and Abhishek dead on arrival.
The bodies have been sent for autopsy, and authorities have informed the families of the deceased. An investigation has been launched, and police are currently reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed near the accident site in an effort to trace the unidentified vehicle responsible for the hit-and-run.
SHO Rathi confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the driver. “We are examining surveillance footage and speaking to witnesses. The driver will be identified and action will be taken,” he said.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over Diwali festivities for the victims’ families and has raised concerns about road safety, especially during peak travel periods.
