Ranjit Sagar Dam Water Level Rises After Heavy Rainfall; Authorities Intensify Vigil Across Pathankot

Pathankot: Following continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and parts of Pathankot, the water level at the Ranjit Sagar Dam has increased to 506 metres, prompting the authorities to step up surveillance. Officials, however, have assured that the reservoir remains well within the safe operating limit, with the water level still 22 metres below the danger mark of 528 metres.

The recent spell of rain has led to a steady inflow into the reservoir, prompting the dam administration to remain on alert. While there is no immediate threat, officials are keeping a close watch on the situation as intermittent rainfall continues across the hilly regions feeding the dam.

Learning from the severe flooding witnessed in the region last year, the administration has strengthened its preparedness well in advance. Dedicated teams have been deployed to monitor the reservoir round the clock and assess changes in the inflow and storage levels.

To ensure a swift response in case of any emergency, a 24-hour control room has also been made operational. The facility is tasked with coordinating real-time monitoring and issuing timely warnings to downstream areas if the need arises.

Ranjit Sagar Dam Executive Engineer Munish Kumar said the reservoir is currently functioning within safe limits and there is no cause for public concern. He stated that the water level is being monitored continuously and that all precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of the flood-like conditions experienced during last year’s monsoon.

Officials added that the dam management is maintaining constant communication with district authorities and disaster management agencies to ensure that any sudden increase in inflow can be addressed without delay.

Meanwhile, residents living in low-lying areas have been advised to stay updated through official advisories, especially if heavy rainfall persists in the upper catchment regions over the coming days.

The district administration has reiterated that while the current situation remains under control, continuous monitoring will continue throughout the monsoon season to safeguard lives and property and to respond promptly to any change in water levels.
