Ferozepur/Manila: A 39-year-old Punjabi businessman from Punjab’s Ferozepur district was shot dead in the Philippine capital of Manila in what police suspect may be a targeted attack linked to his finance business.

The deceased, identified as Ranjit Singh, hailed from Daulatpura village and had been living in Manila with his family for several years. He was reportedly involved in a small-scale lending business along with his elder brother.

According to local reports, the incident took place on May 8 when Ranjit was travelling on his motorcycle to meet a client for the recovery of pending dues. Two unidentified assailants on another motorcycle allegedly intercepted him and opened fire. One of the bullets struck him at close range in the back of the head, killing him instantly.

Investigators recovered five empty bullet shells from the crime scene and have launched a detailed inquiry. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned to identify the attackers and trace their movements.

Police officials believe the murder may have stemmed from tensions related to financial dealings. Family members told investigators that disputes occasionally arose with borrowers over delayed repayments.

Ranjit’s wife has also raised suspicion that the killing could be connected to his business operations, saying he had faced arguments with certain individuals during loan recovery efforts in the past.

At the time of the attack, Ranjit’s elder brother was reportedly visiting their native village in Punjab, leaving him to handle the business alone.

The news has cast a shadow of grief over Daulatpura village, where relatives and residents described Ranjit as a hardworking man who had moved abroad in search of better financial opportunities for his family.

He is survived by his wife, an eight-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son.

Philippine authorities have intensified their search for the killers, while the bereaved family awaits further developments in the case.
