Chandigarh: The race for the Punjab Congress leadership gathered momentum on Saturday as AICC general secretary and the party’s Punjab in-charge, Bhupesh Baghel, met a group of senior leaders considered close to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in Chandigarh.
The meeting took place at the Sector 4 residence of senior Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh and was attended by Charanjit Singh Channi along with several leaders associated with his camp. Baghel arrived at the venue around 12.15 pm for the closed-door discussions.
The interaction comes at a time when speculation over the future leadership of the Punjab Congress has intensified. Although the party has not officially disclosed the agenda of the meeting, it is being viewed as part of the central leadership’s consultations with various factions of the state unit.
Party leaders maintained that the discussions were aimed at gathering feedback on organisational matters and assessing the political situation in Punjab. The exercise is expected to help the Congress high command evaluate different viewpoints before taking any decisions regarding the state leadership.
The meeting assumes significance as internal discussions over the appointment of the next Punjab Congress chief continue to gain attention.
