New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet against a prime accused in the Chandigarh Sector 10 grenade attack case, which was orchestrated by foreign-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorists.
The accused, identified as Abhijot Singh alias Babba alias Gopi, a resident of Punjab, was arrested in April this year for his role in the attack. The NIA submitted the chargesheet before the Special NIA Court in Chandigarh on Friday.
According to the agency, the attack was part of a larger conspiracy masterminded by Pakistan-based BKI terrorist Harwinder Singh alias Rinda, in collaboration with US-based gangster Happy Passia, to spread fear and terror in society. The target was a retired Punjab Police officer.
NIA’s investigation revealed that Passia was responsible for recruiting operatives, funding the plan, and supplying weapons and explosives to the India-based members. Both Rinda and Passia were previously chargesheeted as absconders along with two arrested co-accused — Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih — in March last year.
Further probe established that Abhijot Singh had traveled to Armenia in December 2023, where he was recruited by Passia’s associate Shamsher Shera. After returning to India in mid-2024, Abhijot conducted a reconnaissance of the target in July 2024 and later attempted to assassinate the retired officer with Rohan Masih in August. He reportedly received funds from BKI handlers abroad. The grenade attack was eventually executed in September 2024 by Rohan and Vishal.
The NIA stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other accused involved in providing logistical assistance and terror hardware to the operatives.
