Lynching of Hindu in Bangladesh Sparks Outrage as Taslima Nasreen Raises Questions Over Police Role

Dhaka: The killing of a young Hindu man in Bangladesh has triggered widespread concern and condemnation after a video linked to the incident began circulating on social media. The footage shows 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das speaking to men believed to be police personnel shortly before he was allegedly lynched by a mob in Mymensingh district.

Das, a factory worker in Bhaluka, was reportedly confronted following allegations made by a coworker, who accused him of making offensive remarks. The claim, according to accounts shared online, led to a violent reaction from a group of people. The incident occurred far from Dhaka, at a time when unrest had spread across parts of the country following protests over the killing of political figure Sharif Osman Hadi.

Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has publicly shared a detailed sequence of events on social media, questioning how the situation escalated despite police involvement. In her post, she alleged that Das had denied the accusation and told officers that it was fabricated by a coworker. She further claimed that while Das was briefly taken into custody, he was later left vulnerable, raising doubts about whether the police failed to protect him or were overpowered.

Nasreen’s account strongly criticised what she described as systemic bias and questioned whether the authorities acted adequately to prevent the violence. She also highlighted the impact of the killing on Das’s family, noting that he was the sole earner supporting his parents, wife and child.

The author, who has lived in exile for years after facing threats over her writings, said the incident reflects the insecurity faced by religious minorities and economically vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.

Reacting to her comments, Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed grief over the incident and urged the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure accountability. While acknowledging official condemnation from the Bangladeshi government, he asked what concrete steps were being taken to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The case has intensified international scrutiny of law and order conditions in parts of Bangladesh, with calls growing for a transparent investigation and stronger safeguards for minority communities.
