Georgia: An Indian woman and three of her relatives were fatally shot during a violent domestic dispute in the US state of Georgia, authorities confirmed, in a tragedy that has sent shockwaves through the local community and the Indian diaspora.
The incident took place in the early hours of Friday at a residence in Lawrenceville city, where police responded to an emergency call around 2:30 am local time. Upon arrival, officers found four adults dead inside the home, each having sustained fatal gunshot injuries.
The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming that one of the victims was an Indian national. In a statement shared on social media, the mission said the suspected shooter had been taken into custody and assured that all possible support was being extended to the affected family.
Local media identified the accused as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar, a resident of Atlanta. Police said the victims included his wife, Meemu Dogra (43), along with relatives Gourav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37), and Harish Chander (38). Investigators believe the attack stemmed from an internal family conflict.
Three children were reportedly inside the house when the violence erupted. To protect themselves, they hid in a closet, and one of them managed to dial emergency services, enabling law enforcement to reach the location quickly. The children escaped physical harm and were later taken into the care of another family member.
Kumar has been charged with multiple serious offences, including four counts each of aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder, along with charges related to cruelty to children.
Authorities continue to probe the circumstances that led to the shooting, while community leaders and officials have extended condolences to the bereaved family, calling the incident a devastating reminder of the dangers of domestic violence.
