Tarn Taran: Harmeet Singh Sandhu was officially sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Tarn Taran on Thursday, with Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan administering the oath of office.
Sandhu, a seasoned politician and former Akali Dal legislator, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) earlier this year after resigning from SAD. He has previously served three terms as MLA — first as an independent in 2002–07, and subsequently as a SAD representative from 2007–12 and 2012–17.
The bypoll that brought Sandhu back to the Assembly was held following the passing of sitting MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. In the November 14 election, Sandhu secured a decisive victory, defeating his nearest SAD rival by more than 12,000 votes.
Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, Sandhu met with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who instructed officials to fast-track all pending development projects in Tarn Taran. Speaking after taking the oath, Sandhu expressed gratitude to the electorate for placing their trust in him and promised to work diligently for the constituency’s progress.
Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan praised Sandhu’s extensive political experience and noted that his presence would enrich legislative discussions in the Assembly. The new MLA emphasized that development, public welfare, and efficient governance would be his top priorities in the coming term.
