New Delhi/Goa: Ajay Gupta, one of the co-owners of the Goa nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane, was brought to Delhi’s Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Cell on Wednesday for questioning in connection with the massive fire that killed 25 people earlier this month. As he arrived at the Crime Branch office in Sunlight Colony—masked and avoiding cameras—Gupta briefly told reporters, “I am only a partner.”
Detained After Days of Evasion
According to investigative sources, Gupta had been out of reach since the December 6 blaze in the Arpora area of North Goa. Goa Police had issued a Look Out Circular after failing to locate him during earlier searches in the national capital.
He was eventually traced to a private hospital in Lajpat Nagar, where he had admitted himself citing spinal issues. After doctors cleared him medically, he was detained and taken to the Crime Branch for procedural formalities, including initiating a transit remand. Officials said he is likely to be arrested once Goa Police complete the paperwork.
Focus of Questioning: Operations and Fire Safety
Authorities say Gupta will be questioned extensively in Goa regarding the nightclub’s management structure, distribution of responsibilities among partners and staff, and compliance with fire-safety norms—an area now under intense scrutiny following the high fatality count.
Other Arrests and International Notices
Five staff members of the nightclub—chief general manager Rajiv Modak, general manager Vivek Singh, bar manager Rajiv Singhania, gate manager Riyanshu Thakur and employee Bharat Kohli—have already been arrested in connection with the tragedy.
Meanwhile, two of the club’s owners, brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, left India shortly after the incident. Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice to help trace their whereabouts.
Continuing Investigation
The nightclub fire, one of the deadliest in Goa’s recent history, has placed a spotlight on safety lapses and alleged violations in the hospitality sector. Investigators say they are piecing together the chain of responsibility, and Gupta’s interrogation will play a key role in establishing how the venue was being run in the lead-up to the disaster.
Goa Police are expected to move Gupta to the state once the transit remand is granted.
