Bar Council Withdraws Election Schedule for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Bar Associations

Chandigarh: The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has withdrawn the recently announced election schedule for Bar Associations across Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The decision follows a communication from the Bar Council of India dated April 9, 2026, which called for a reconsideration of the earlier schedule issued on April 5. The move came after multiple representations were received from Bar Associations across the region raising concerns over the timeline and process.

The election programme had initially been framed under the Bar Associations (Constitution and Registration) Rules, 2015, and included a provision to ensure 30% reservation for women lawyers, in line with directions of the Supreme Court of India.

After reviewing the concerns and internal inputs, the Bar Council decided to withdraw the schedule for now. A revised election programme will be announced at a later stage.
