Afghanistan Claims to Have Eliminated 58 Pakistani Soldiers in Retaliatory Border Strikes

Kabul: In a dramatic escalation of cross-border tensions, Afghanistan announced on Sunday that its forces carried out overnight military operations along the Pakistan frontier, allegedly killing 58 Pakistani soldiers and seizing multiple military positions.

According to a statement released by Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, Afghan forces launched the counteraction after what they described as continuous violations of Afghan territory and airspace by Pakistan. Mujahid said that 25 Pakistani border posts were taken under Afghan control during the operation, while around 30 Pakistani personnel sustained injuries.

The latest confrontation follows a week of growing hostility between the two neighbors. Earlier, Afghan officials had accused Pakistan of conducting air raids targeting areas in Kabul and an eastern marketplace—attacks for which Islamabad has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.

Although official verification from independent sources remains unavailable, the claims mark one of the most severe escalations between the two countries since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Tensions along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border have remained volatile for months, with both sides frequently accusing each other of harboring militants and violating sovereign boundaries. Observers fear the latest exchange could further destabilize the already fragile security situation in the region.

Neither Pakistan’s military nor its foreign ministry has issued an official response to Kabul’s claims at the time of this report.
