Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday unveiled its initial slate of 961 candidates for the upcoming Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab, signalling the start of an intensive political buildup ahead of the 2027 Assembly race.
Large-scale rural elections set for December 14
Voters across Punjab will head to the polls on December 14 to elect representatives to 22 Zila Parishads—with Mohali excluded due to postponed elections—and more than 150 Panchayat Samitis. Counting of votes will take place on December 17.
The elections, arriving barely 15 months before the next Assembly contest, have pushed all major parties into campaign mode as they prepare to test the strength of their networks in the state’s villages.
AAP seeks to counter anti-incumbency through grassroots mobilisation
For the ruling party, the rural polls are more than routine administrative exercises. AAP leadership has communicated to its cadre that the outcome of these elections will influence ticket distribution for the 2027 Assembly polls. Party workers have been told to treat the rural polls as a “performance exam”, with organisational energy and local outreach under close scrutiny.
In anticipation of the elections, AAP had already restructured most of its block-level units, a move intended to sharpen booth management and mobilise loyal voters. Ministers and local legislators have increased their presence in their constituencies since the election schedule was announced on November 28.
Nominations underway
Candidates have until December 4 to file their papers. By Tuesday, 26 nominations had been submitted for Zila Parishad seats and 115 for Panchayat Samiti positions, according to election officials.
Administrative lapse triggers show-cause notice
In a separate development, State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhari issued a show-cause notice to Dera Bassi BDPO Baljit Singh Sohi after he failed to be present on December 1, the first day of nominations. His absence led to complaints from aspirants who were unable to obtain required No Objection Certificates.
Political implications
With significant stakes attached, the rural polls are shaping up as an early barometer of voter mood in Punjab. For AAP—facing signs of fatigue in some pockets—the results could offer either reassurance or a warning as it heads toward a crucial Assembly battle in 2027. Other parties, too, see December 14 as an opportunity to regain lost ground and expand their influence at the grassroots.
