NEW DELHI — In a historic shift aimed at enhancing institutional transparency and accountability, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that it will release the provisional answer key for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026 shortly after the conclusion of the exam. The unprecedented decision marks a departure from the commission’s long-standing practice of publishing answer keys only after the entire multi-stage examination process is fully completed.

UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar characterized the reform as a significant milestone for the country’s premier civil services recruitment body. Kumar noted that the initiative reflects the commission’s ongoing endeavour to foster greater responsiveness and timely communication with aspirants. He emphasized that the updated policy is designed to make the rigorous examination process more participative and student-friendly while strictly upholding the sanctity, integrity, and merit-based framework that defines the institution.

Under the newly established protocol, candidates will have a dedicated window until May 31, 2026, at 6:00 PM to review the provisional keys and submit formal representations or objections. All challenges must be processed through the commission’s official digital platform, the Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep), accessible via the portal website. To ensure the integrity of the review process, candidates raising objections are required to specify their proposed correct answers, provide a brief analytical description of the discrepancy, and upload supporting documentary evidence sourced from three recognized, authentic academic references.

The commission has outlined a thorough review mechanism to handle the anticipated influx of candidate inputs. Upon the closure of the submission window, all received representations will be systematically compiled and placed before specialized panels of independent subject matter experts. These domain specialists will meticulously evaluate each objection against the provided documentation before recording their final, considered views. The UPSC will finalize and lock the definitive answer key only after this comprehensive expert audit is completed, ensuring an equitable assessment that bolsters candidate confidence in the competitive system.
