Kota: A late-night road accident near the Hanging Bridge in Kota claimed three lives and left over a dozen passengers injured after a sleeper bus lost control and overturned on a four-lane highway.
The incident occurred when the bus, travelling from Ahmedabad towards parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Gwalior and Bhind, crossed the Hanging Bridge and reached the Nayagaon culvert area. According to initial findings, the vehicle suddenly became unstable, rammed into a divider, crossed into the opposite lane, and flipped over.
The crash triggered panic at the scene as passengers were thrown about inside the bus. Several individuals were trapped in the wreckage, prompting immediate rescue efforts by local residents and police teams from nearby stations, including RK Puram. Emergency responders worked through the night to pull out those stuck inside the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that a few passengers were flung out onto the road due to the impact. In the chaos that followed, three individuals were hit by an oncoming trolley truck, resulting in their deaths. Locals noted that the situation could have been even worse had the bus fallen off the culvert instead of landing in the adjacent lane.
All injured passengers were rushed to the Kota Medical College Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Authorities had earlier placed hospitals across the city on alert to handle the emergency.
City Superintendent of Police Tejaswini Gautam visited both the accident site and the hospital to oversee relief efforts and meet the injured. Passengers told officials that the bus was travelling at a considerable speed before the mishap.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether mechanical failure or driver error played a role.
