Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has been named in a fresh police complaint after a woman alleged that medical negligence at a Sebaashray health camp—a healthcare outreach initiative launched by the lawmaker—resulted in the amputation of her right leg. The Diamond Harbour MP had unveiled the high-profile healthcare initiative on January 2 during his party’s tenure in West Bengal. This latest case marks the third FIR registered against the parliamentarian in recent months in connection with alleged operational irregularities and malpractice at these localized medical outreach camps.
The case was formalised after the complainant, Maloti Biswas, a resident of Maheshtala in the South 24 Parganas district, approached the local law enforcement authorities to report her ordeal. According to the police report, Biswas had attended one of the temporary healthcare camps a couple of months ago seeking treatment for persistent knee pain. She was examined and prescribed a course of medication by the attending staff, which she subsequently began taking at home. Instead of receiving relief, her physical condition deteriorated rapidly, eventually forcing her to seek emergency assistance at a second Sebaashray camp established in her area.
The victim alleged in her complaint that the medical personnel at the second camp demanded a substantial sum of money to continue her treatment. When she informed them that she was unable to pay the requested amount, the staff abruptly referred her to a state-run medical facility. Biswas was subsequently admitted to a government medical college hospital, where examining doctors determined that the damage to her right leg had become completely irreversible due to improper initial treatment. Surgeons were forced to amputate the limb to prevent further medical complications.
An official at the Rabindranagar police station confirmed that a formal FIR has been registered against Banerjee and several associated individuals based on the detailed statement submitted by the victim. The local police department has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the camp’s administrative protocols, the qualifications of the medical staff involved, and the specific drugs administered to the patient to establish the exact chain of accountability.
