Lucknow: Bringing festive relief to millions of households, the Yogi Adityanath–led Uttar Pradesh government has announced that women registered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will receive a free LPG cylinder this Diwali.
The initiative, part of the ‘UP Free Gas Cylinder Scheme’, provides one filled LPG cylinder each during Holi and Diwali every year. The move aims to ease the financial burden on economically weaker families and promote the use of clean cooking fuel across the state.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries are required to pay the full price upfront when booking their LPG cylinder. The entire amount is later reimbursed directly into their bank accounts as a subsidy, effectively making the refill free of cost.
Officials clarified that only beneficiaries who have completed their e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) verification for their Ujjwala connections will be eligible for the festive benefit. The process can be completed online via the official PMUY website or offline at nearby gas agencies.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in 2016, provides free LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, including those under SC/ST, Antyodaya Anna Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural). In addition to the festive offer, Ujjwala beneficiaries are also entitled to a ₹300 subsidy per cylinder for up to nine refills per year.
This decision aligns with the state government’s broader mission to improve rural living standards, promote women’s empowerment, and encourage environmentally sustainable cooking practices.
