New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk continues to receive treatment at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors say his condition is stable but requires constant medical supervision due to the prolonged effects of fasting.
In its latest Health Bulletin No. 8, issued on July 21, the hospital said Wangchuk remains under the observation of a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from VMMC, Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi.
According to the bulletin, while his vital signs are stable, several clinical parameters continue to require attention. Doctors stated that his blood sugar level remains on the lower side, while laboratory tests conducted on a blood sample collected on Sunday night showed his serum potassium level at 3.2 mEq/L.
The medical team also reported that Wangchuk continues to exhibit persistent pancytopenia, a condition involving reduced counts of multiple blood cell types, along with anaemia and low white blood cell counts. Physicians said these findings necessitate continuous monitoring through repeated laboratory investigations.
The hospital confirmed that Wangchuk is currently accepting oral rehydration solution (ORS) and oral potassium supplements. However, it added that he has continued to decline intravenous fluids and glucose administration, despite repeated medical advice recommending the treatment.
Doctors further noted that Wangchuk is experiencing mild to moderate dehydration, and the prolonged fast has placed considerable physiological stress on his body. They stressed that sustained medical care and uninterrupted observation remain essential to detect and manage any complications that could arise.
The bulletin stated that all necessary medical assistance is being provided and that further treatment decisions will depend on Wangchuk’s clinical progress and the results of serial laboratory tests.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike in connection with the ongoing agitation over the alleged NEET 2026 paper leak, and his health has remained under close public scrutiny as the protest continues.
