Chandigarh, October 10, 2025: The Chandigarh Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the mysterious death of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, officials confirmed on Friday. Security personnel have also been deployed outside his Sector-11 government residence as the investigation gathers pace.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead at his official accommodation on October 7. Preliminary reports indicate that he died by suicide, leaving behind a note alleging mental harassment and caste-based discrimination by several senior police officers.
Acting on a complaint filed by his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, police registered an FIR under charges of abetment to suicide and provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The complaint names multiple senior Haryana Police officials, including some holding top positions.
Sources said that the SIT will examine all aspects of the case, including allegations of workplace bias and the sequence of events leading up to the officer’s death. Investigators are also verifying the authenticity of the suicide note and reviewing Kumar’s official correspondence for evidence of pressure or harassment.
Amneet P Kumar has urged authorities to ensure a fair probe and has sought corrections to the FIR to include all relevant names and details mentioned in her complaint. The case has sparked widespread concern across bureaucratic circles in Haryana and Chandigarh, with demands for accountability and protection of officers facing institutional bias.
