Patna: A wave of panic swept through the premises of Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib after a threatening email claimed that explosive devices containing RDX were planted inside the Langar Hall of the revered Sikh shrine. The alert triggered a swift response from the police, bomb disposal unit, and cybercrime investigators.
The email, reportedly sent to the post office of Takht Patna Sahib, claimed that four RDX-laced LED devices had been installed in the langar (community kitchen) area. Upon receiving the alarming message, senior officials of the Takht Management Committee, including President Jagjot Singh Sohi, General Secretary Inderjit Singh, and other staff, immediately notified the police and security agencies.
Search Operation Launched, No Explosives Found
Following the alert, security forces cordoned off the area and launched an intensive search operation. Teams from the bomb squad, anti-sabotage unit, and dog squad scoured the Langar Hall and surrounding premises throughout the day.
By late evening, authorities confirmed that no explosive materials had been found. However, the atmosphere around the holy site remained tense, with devotees, staff, and nearby residents gripped by anxiety.
“We took the threat very seriously. All standard procedures were followed, and a thorough check of the premises was conducted. So far, nothing suspicious has been discovered,” said Dr. Gaurav Kumar, DSP-2, who is supervising the investigation. He also confirmed that the email has been handed over to the Cyber Cell for digital forensics to trace its origin.
Possible Conspiracy Ahead of Major Religious Event
Sudeep Singh, Media In-Charge of the Takht Patna Sahib Committee, expressed deep concern over the timing of the threat. “In the coming days, the Shaheed Jagriti Yatra is scheduled to begin from this historic site. Dignitaries, including the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, religious leaders, and thousands of devotees from across India and abroad, are expected to attend. Sending such a threat in this context cannot be taken lightly—it could be part of a larger conspiracy,” he stated.
Heightened Security Measures in Place
In response to the threat, security has been significantly tightened around the Takht premises. Additional personnel have been deployed, and surveillance has been increased with the installation of more CCTV cameras and metal detectors at all entry and exit points. Police have also intensified patrolling in the surrounding areas to reassure residents and pilgrims.
The incident has stirred concern among religious communities and the Sikh diaspora, as Takht Sri Patna Sahib is one of the five takhts (seats of authority) in Sikhism and holds immense religious and historical importance. It is the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, and attracts thousands of pilgrims annually.
Investigation Underway
Cybercrime officials are now working to trace the IP address and origin of the email. Preliminary investigations suggest that the email could have been sent using anonymizing tools or fake accounts, complicating the process. However, officials are hopeful of identifying the sender soon.
“We are not ruling out any possibility. Whether it’s a hoax, mischief, or a deliberate attempt to disrupt religious harmony—everything is being considered. We will get to the bottom of it,” a senior police officer involved in the probe said.
Community Urged to Stay Calm
While the immediate threat has been ruled out, authorities have urged the public and the community to remain calm but vigilant. Religious leaders and the management committee have appealed to devotees not to panic and to continue with regular prayers and rituals under the watchful eye of the enhanced security arrangements.
