Amritsar: A Punjab Police officer tragically lost his life in Amritsar on Thursday during a statewide shutdown called by sanitation workers, which drew a mixed response across the province. The deceased has been identified as Head Constable Ranbir Singh, a resident of Batala district who was serving in the Armed Reserve Police. The fatal incident occurred while the officer was traveling home on his scooter following the completion of his duty shift.
The accident took place at Bhandari Bridge, where demonstrators had tied a rope across the roadway to halt vehicular traffic as part of the protest. Traveling on his Activa scooter, Singh was unable to see the rope in time, causing it to catch him across the neck and inflict critical injuries. Bystanders and emergency responders rushed him to the local Civil Hospital, where medical personnel declared him dead on arrival.
Reports indicate that Singh was hastening home after receiving a phone call from his family informing him that his son had been injured. Local law enforcement authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the placement of the road barrier. The July 30 strike had been called by the sanitation workers’ union to advance their pending demands and protest a recent police baton charge in Barnala, resulting in various travel disruptions across multiple districts.
