Chandigarh: Preparations have gathered pace in Chandigarh ahead of a proposed visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, during which he is expected to dedicate several major public infrastructure projects to the nation. Although the official itinerary has not yet been released, administrative agencies have reportedly begun making arrangements for the high-profile visit.

According to sources, the Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate key facilities at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) along with other development projects aimed at strengthening healthcare and urban infrastructure in the region. Officials are also preparing for the possibility of his travelling to neighbouring Haryana after the Chandigarh programme.

Among the flagship projects expected to be launched is the newly constructed 300-bed Advanced Eye and Trauma Centre at PGIMER. Built at an estimated cost of nearly ₹495 crore, the facility is equipped with modern clinical laboratories, ENT services, faculty rooms, a cafeteria, dental support facilities and other advanced medical infrastructure designed to improve patient care.

Another major project awaiting inauguration is the 300-bed Mother and Child Block at PGIMER, developed at an approximate cost of ₹485 crore. The new block is expected to significantly enhance specialised healthcare services for women and children while reducing the patient load on existing facilities.

Sources also indicated that the Prime Minister may dedicate the redeveloped Chandigarh railway station to the public. The project, estimated at around ₹117 crore, includes modern passenger amenities, upgraded infrastructure and a city-centre capsule concept aimed at improving connectivity and commuter experience.

Security agencies and the local administration have reportedly initiated preliminary arrangements in anticipation of the visit. Coordination meetings involving various departments are expected to intensify over the coming days to finalise logistics, security protocols and venue preparations.

While the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to issue an official confirmation, officials familiar with the arrangements said preparations are progressing in view of the proposed schedule. If the visit proceeds as planned, it will mark the inauguration of multiple projects collectively valued at more than ₹1,000 crore, with a strong focus on healthcare and public infrastructure in Chandigarh.
