NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded a massive urban transformation drive in the national capital on Sunday, March 8, 2026, by inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for development projects totaling approximately ₹33,500 crore. The wide-ranging package focuses on modernizing government housing and dramatically expanding the Delhi Metro network, marking a historic leap in the city’s infrastructure and quality of life.
A central component of the day’s events was the handover of 2,722 newly constructed flats under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment plan. Prior to a large public gathering, the Prime Minister visited Sarojini Nagar to personally hand over keys to female beneficiaries, a symbolic gesture highlighting the government’s focus on women-led development. The redevelopment project, which covers roughly 537 acres across colonies like Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, and Sriniwaspuri, utilizes an innovative self-financing model. By monetizing approximately 13 per cent of the land for commercial and residential use, the government is funding the entire ₹32,800 crore project without utilizing taxpayer funds, while also addressing a shortage of over 20,000 houses for central employees.
The connectivity landscape of Delhi reached a major milestone today with the inauguration of two critical metro corridors worth ₹18,300 crore. The 12.3-kilometre Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line was officially opened, effectively closing the loop of the 72-kilometre corridor and giving Delhi India’s first fully operational “Ring Metro.” Additionally, the 9.92-kilometre extension of the Magenta Line from Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park was launched, providing high-speed access to previously underserved areas in North and Northwest Delhi. This extension features an engineering marvel where the tracks reach a height of over 28 metres, one of the highest points in the entire DMRC network.
Looking toward future growth, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for three new corridors under Phase V-A of the Delhi Metro expansion. These sections, spanning 16.1 kilometres, include the R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha corridor, the Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal-1 link, and the Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj stretch. These upcoming lines are expected to provide seamless connectivity between Central Delhi, South Delhi, Noida, and the international airport. During the event, the Prime Minister also interacted with female construction workers involved in the GPRA projects, acknowledging their vital contribution to the nation’s progress and the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
