Bhogapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, marking a significant addition to Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure. Developed as a greenfield project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the airport has been built at an estimated cost of over Rs 5,640 crore and is designed to handle around 60 lakh passengers annually.
Located near Visakhapatnam, the new airport is expected to improve regional and international air connectivity while supporting tourism, trade, investment and employment opportunities across the state.
The passenger terminal has been equipped with modern infrastructure to ensure a faster and more efficient travel experience. It integrates several advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Airside 4.0 systems, an Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC), biometric passenger processing, automated baggage handling and intelligent operational monitoring. These features are aimed at improving passenger convenience, enhancing security and streamlining airport operations.
Sustainability has been a key element of the project. The airport includes energy-efficient HVAC systems, LED lighting, a 5 MW solar power plant, rainwater harvesting facilities, smart building management systems, waste management solutions, electric vehicle charging stations and environmental monitoring infrastructure. The terminal has also been designed to meet Green Building Standards and is registered with the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
The airport’s architecture reflects Andhra Pradesh’s cultural identity. Its design takes inspiration from the state’s traditional Chuttilu cottages and the scenic beauty of Araku Valley, while the terminal’s distinctive roof resembles the movement of a flying fish, combining local heritage with contemporary airport design.
With the commissioning of the Bhogapuram airport, the Centre expects enhanced connectivity, improved infrastructure and increased economic activity across Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the Visakhapatnam region.
