New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held wide-ranging bilateral talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, connectivity, border security and defence.
Aung Hlaing is currently on a five-day visit to India, marking his first official trip to the country since assuming the presidency earlier this year. The visit comes less than two months after he took office following Myanmar’s parliamentary elections held in December and January.
Welcoming the visiting leader at Hyderabad House, Prime Minister Modi held discussions aimed at deepening strategic and economic ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Sharing details of the meeting, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders exchanged views on expanding friendship and cooperation between India and Myanmar.
Myanmar remains a key strategic partner for India, sharing a 1,640-kilometre border with several northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur. The two countries regularly engage on issues related to security, trade, connectivity projects and regional stability.
Prior to the prime ministerial talks, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Aung Hlaing on Sunday and discussed various aspects of bilateral relations.
The Myanmar President is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes cabinet ministers, senior government officials and business representatives. During his visit, he is also scheduled to travel to Mumbai on June 2 for meetings with industry leaders and to visit key business establishments.
Aung Hlaing was initially expected to attend the International Big Cat Alliance Summit in New Delhi on June 1, but the event has since been postponed.
