New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday emphasised that mental health is a “fundamental part” of overall well-being, highlighting the importance of World Mental Health Day.

In a post shared on X, PM Modi called for greater public engagement in conversations about mental health and praised those working to support and heal others. “World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of our overall well-being. In a fast-paced world, this day underscores the importance of reflecting and extending compassion to others,” he wrote.

He further urged collective action to create environments where mental health discussions become mainstream. “My compliments to all those working in this field and helping others heal and find happiness,” he added.

Observed annually on October 10, World Mental Health Day was first marked in 1992, initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). This year’s campaign focuses on supporting the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

Crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies cause significant emotional distress, with one in five people experiencing a mental health condition. WHO stressed that supporting mental well-being during these events not only saves lives but also helps individuals and communities heal, cope, and rebuild.

The UN agency called on governments, health and social care providers, school staff, and community groups to work together. Investing in evidence-based and community-level interventions can address immediate mental health needs, foster long-term recovery, and empower people to thrive.
