New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed relief after US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were reported safe following a security scare during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington.

Reacting to the incident, Modi strongly condemned violence and said such acts have no place in democratic societies.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was relieved to learn that President Trump and other senior US leaders were unharmed and extended his wishes for their continued safety and well-being.

“Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned,” Modi said.

The reaction came after an armed man reportedly entered the lobby area outside the high-profile journalists’ dinner on Saturday night and attempted to move toward the ballroom where the event was underway.

According to reports, Secret Service personnel quickly intervened, overpowered the suspect and took him into custody before he could reach the main event venue.

All protectees under Secret Service security were safely evacuated. President Trump was unharmed in the incident.

Several senior American officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were present at the event when the security breach unfolded.

The incident prompted a swift security response and has raised concerns over protective arrangements at high-profile public gatherings in the United States.
