Mumbai: A fatal accident occurred on Saturday afternoon after a slab from an under-construction metro girder bridge collapsed onto vehicles in Mumbai’s Mulund area, leaving one person dead and three others injured, officials said.
According to police and civic authorities, a portion of the parapet wall of the girder bridge fell shortly after noon near the Johnson and Johnson factory along the busy LBS Road. The debris landed on an autorickshaw and a Skoda car, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
Fire brigade officials identified the deceased as Ramdhan Yadav. The injured were named as Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45), Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40). Rajkumar is reported to be in critical condition and is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a nearby hospital, while Mahendra and Ruhiya are said to be stable.
In a statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) said a segment of the parapet wall fell at around 12.15 pm near pier 196 of the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, close to the Mulund Fire Station, onto a passing autorickshaw.
The authority said its project team immediately reached the spot and initiated rescue and site-securing operations in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and disaster management officials. An inquiry has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Metro Line 4 is a key infrastructure project connecting Wadala in south-central Mumbai to neighbouring Thane, with a significant stretch running along the arterial LBS Road that links Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund.
Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad criticised the state government, questioning whether public safety was being sidelined in the rush to complete infrastructure projects. In a post on X, she alleged that authorities were prioritising publicity over stringent safety compliance.
The Lok Sabha MP called for accountability, raising concerns about possible lapses in safety protocols at the high-traffic construction site. She said repeated announcements of probes were inadequate and stressed that development should not come at the expense of citizens’ lives.
