Kendrapara (Odisha): A 76-year-old man lost his life and at least nine others sustained injuries after a swarm of bees attacked residents in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Friday afternoon, police officials said.

The incident took place at Jaguleipada village under the jurisdiction of the Rajkanika police station when a swarm suddenly descended on people in the area. According to a senior officer, the victims were caught off guard as the bees began stinging multiple individuals.

The deceased has been identified as Bailochan Biswal. He was rushed to the Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The nine other injured villagers received medical care and were subsequently discharged, officials confirmed.

Preliminary findings indicate that a beehive measuring nearly two feet in length was found hanging from a tree within the premises of a village school. Authorities suspect that some disturbance may have triggered the bees, leading to the sudden attack.

Local police and concerned departments have taken note of the incident, and precautionary steps are expected to be undertaken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
