New Delhi: Nitin Nabin on Tuesday took charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, becoming the youngest person to lead the ruling party since its inception. At 45, Nabin succeeds J P Nadda, marking the beginning of a new phase in the BJP’s organisational leadership as it looks to strengthen its political footprint across the country.
The results of the BJP’s organisational elections were formally announced by party returning officer K Laxman at a ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in the national capital. Laxman handed over the certificate of election to Nabin in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president J P Nadda and senior party leaders, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Nitin Nabin becomes the 12th national president of the BJP since the party was founded in 1980, a year that also coincides with his birth. Known for maintaining a low profile, Nabin had recently resigned from his ministerial responsibilities in the Bihar government, where he held key portfolios such as law and justice, urban development and housing. His resignation followed his appointment as the BJP’s working president on December 14, a move widely interpreted as a clear indication of his elevation to the party’s top post.
Announcing the election outcome, K Laxman said the development reflected the BJP’s organisational ethos, asserting that leadership within the party emerges through commitment and dedication rather than lineage or privilege.
Addressing party leaders and workers, outgoing president J P Nadda described the occasion as historic and praised Nabin’s rise within the organisation. He said the BJP was placing its trust in a young, energetic and capable leader to guide the world’s largest political party into the future.
Nabin’s elevation is being seen as a significant generational transition within the BJP’s leadership structure, as the party prepares to navigate upcoming political challenges and consolidate its position nationally.
