Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday approved a major 35-km Metro corridor connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, at an estimated cost of ₹22,862 crore.

The proposed Metro Line 8 will have 20 stations, including six underground and 14 elevated stations. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, land acquisition for the project will span 30.7 hectares and is expected to cost around ₹388 crore.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed all concerned departments to complete land acquisition and statutory approvals within six months, with construction to be finished within three years of receiving clearances. The project is aimed at improving connectivity between the two airports and easing travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Of the total alignment, 9.25 km—from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East—will run underground, while the remaining 24.63 km will be elevated, extending from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2.

The committee also reviewed progress on other key infrastructure projects. Fadnavis instructed officials to expedite the extension of the Samruddhi Expressway on the Nagpur–Gondia and Bhandara–Gadchiroli stretches to avoid delays.

In preparation for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, the panel approved the Nashik city ring road project, covering 66.15 km, at a cost of ₹3,954 crore. Additionally, it cleared the upgrade of the 85.76-km Navegaon More–Konsari–Mulchera–Hedri–Surjagad highway in Gadchiroli district into a four-lane cement concrete road to support mineral transportation and regional development.
