Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir – A devastating landslide struck the Vaishno Devi shrine route in Reasi district on Tuesday, killing five people and leaving 14 others injured. The incident occurred near Adhkwari, roughly midway along the 12-kilometre trek to the shrine, around 3 pm.

Officials said the landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall that has battered the region over the past few days. Large masses of rock and debris crashed down near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya area, catching pilgrims and staff off guard.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, with teams from the Army, police, and disaster response units rushing to the site. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, and authorities confirmed that all necessary medical facilities were made available.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board suspended the pilgrimage soon after the tragedy to prevent further risk to devotees. Authorities also urged pilgrims to avoid travel until conditions improve and the route is declared safe again.

The landslide added to wider disruptions caused by incessant rain in Jammu and Kashmir. Train services were hit, with at least ten trains cancelled as tracks were damaged and waterlogging affected operations. Several areas of the region also reported flash floods and blocked roads, intensifying the crisis.

Officials said relief and restoration efforts are underway and assured that the shrine route will reopen only after thorough clearance and safety checks.
