New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, officially succeeding Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, who demitted office on Sunday. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath.
Justice Kant, known for his sharp judicial acumen and extensive experience across constitutional and administrative law, will lead the Supreme Court until February 9, 2027, when he attains the mandatory retirement age of 65. His elevation comes after the Union government cleared his appointment earlier this week.
A former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Kant has served in the Supreme Court since 2019 and has authored several significant judgments during his tenure.
