New Delhi— Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) director general Praveen Kumar has been assigned the additional charge of Border Security Force (BSF) chief starting December 1, the Union home ministry announced on Friday. The appointment follows the retirement of Daljit Singh Chaudhary, who will superannuate on November 30.
Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre, served in the Intelligence Bureau for more than twenty years before taking over as ITBP chief on October 1. His elevation comes at a time when border security and internal security coordination remain major national priorities.
Chaudhary, known for his leadership during Operation Sindoor, received four gallantry medals during his service. Under his command, BSF personnel earned two Vir Chakras and 16 gallantry medals for their role in destroying Pakistani outposts, neutralising infiltration attempts and targeting terror launch pads after the Pahalgam attack.
The BSF, with nearly 2.7 lakh personnel, is the world’s largest border guarding force. The ITBP is responsible for securing the India-China frontier across five states and also supports internal security duties.
Both Kumar and Chaudhary are currently in Raipur for the annual Director Generals’ conference. Ahead of the meet, chiefs of central armed police forces visited the Bastar region amid intensified anti-Maoist operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 60th edition of the DGs conference on November 29–30 at IIM Raipur, held under the theme “Viksit Bharat: Security Dimensions.”
