Gurdaspur: Punjab Police have uncovered a significant transnational link in the recent killing of two police officials in Gurdaspur, revealing that the attack was orchestrated by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI. During a press conference, senior officials, including DIG Sandeep Goel, disclosed that the three suspects involved—Ranjit Singh, Dilawar Singh, and Inderjit Singh—were in direct contact with ISI handlers across the border.

The investigation highlights how the intelligence agency exploited the suspects’ local knowledge and financial vulnerabilities to execute the crime:

  • The Motive: The ISI allegedly lured the trio with the promise of ₹4 lakh to carry out the targeted killings of police personnel. Dilawar Singh, who is currently in custody, was promised ₹20,000 and had already received an initial payment of ₹3,000.

  • The Execution: Being residents of the nearby Adian village, the suspects were able to conduct reconnaissance on their targets. They waited for a vulnerable moment to murder ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar.

  • The Mastermind: 19-year-old Ranjit Singh, who had no prior criminal record, was identified as the mastermind of the attack. His accomplice, 21-year-old Inderjit Singh, has a history of drug trafficking charges but remains at large.

The breakthrough followed a high-stakes encounter at approximately 3:00 AM on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. Police had initially apprehended Ranjit Singh and were transporting him to recover weapons when the SHO’s vehicle overturned, allowing the suspect to briefly escape. He was subsequently cornered in the Purana Shalla area by a CIA team. Ranjit Singh opened fire on the officers in an attempt to flee but was killed in the ensuing exchange of fire.

Authorities are currently investigating the financial trail to identify the specific source of the promised funds and are conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive, Inderjit Singh.
