New Delhi: India added another medal to its international tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as weightlifter Lovepreet Singh, hailing from Amritsar, clinched a silver medal in the men’s +110 kg category. Demonstrating remarkable strength and precision, Lovepreet lifted a total of 388 kg, comprising 176 kg in the snatch and 212 kg in the clean and jerk. He narrowly missed the gold medal by just one kilogram to New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti, who lifted a total of 389 kg, while England’s Andrew Griffith secured the bronze medal.

The historic achievement sparked widespread celebrations across Lovepreet’s native border village of Ball Sachander in Amritsar. Family members, relatives, and local villagers gathered with traditional drums and distributed sweets to celebrate the victory. Lovepreet, who serves as a sailor in the Indian Navy, comes from humble beginnings; his father works as a tailor, and his grandfather previously earned a living selling vegetables.

Local leadership and family members expressed immense pride over the international feat. His father, Kirpal Singh, shared that Lovepreet had promised to return home with a medal before leaving for the competition, a commitment he successfully fulfilled. Village Sarpanch Jugraj Singh noted that the triumph came after more than a decade of relentless training, describing Lovepreet’s journey as a powerful motivation for local youth attempting to excel in international sports.
