Perth: A 52-year-old Indian national, identified as Sudhir Kumar Chauhan, has been arrested and charged in Australia following an alleged sexual assault during a Scoot Airlines flight from Singapore to Perth. According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the incident occurred earlier this week when Chauhan allegedly assaulted a woman seated next to him while the aircraft was in transit. The victim immediately alerted the cabin crew, who took swift action by relocating her to a different seat and monitoring the situation until the flight landed, while simultaneously notifying law enforcement on the ground.
Upon arrival at Perth Airport, AFP officers boarded the aircraft and detained Chauhan. He has been formally charged with sexual intercourse without consent and multiple counts of indecent acts without consent. The West Australian reports that Chauhan has been refused bail and remains in custody. He is scheduled for a bail hearing today, Friday, April 17, 2026. In accordance with Australian legal standards for protecting the privacy of complainants in sexual assault cases, no details regarding the victim’s identity have been released.
AFP Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal emphasized that passenger safety is a top priority and that all travellers have the right to feel secure, especially within the confined environment of a commercial aircraft. He commended the victim for coming forward and urged anyone facing similar situations to report incidents to cabin crew or airport security immediately. Authorities have reiterated that non-consensual behavior onboard aircraft is treated with the utmost seriousness under Australian law. Scoot Airlines has acknowledged the incident but has yet to release a detailed public statement regarding its internal security protocols.
