Sitamarhi (Bihar): A tragic incident in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district claimed the lives of five members of a family, including four children and a newborn, after a large branch of a peepal tree crashed onto their house during a storm early Tuesday morning.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. in Rewasi village when strong winds and heavy rainfall swept through the area.
Confirming the incident, Sitamarhi Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer Anand Kumar said a heavy branch of a peepal tree fell on the mud house of Sikandar Sahni during the storm, trapping the family members under the debris.
The deceased have been identified as Sikandar Sahni’s wife, Pooja Devi (32), and the couple’s four children, all below the age of 10, including a newborn baby. They died at the scene before rescue efforts could save them.
Sikandar Sahni, who was also present in the house at the time of the incident, sustained injuries. Officials said he received medical treatment and is currently recovering.
The tragedy has left the village in shock, with residents mourning the loss of an entire young family. Local authorities reached the spot after receiving information and initiated relief measures.
Riga MLA Baidyanath Prasad visited the bereaved family and expressed his condolences. According to a statement issued by his office, he directed concerned officials to ensure that government compensation and other assistance are provided to the affected family without delay.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by severe weather conditions and ageing trees during storms, particularly in rural areas where many families live in vulnerable structures.
