First Week of Parliamentary Monsoon Session Washed Out Over NEET Paper Leak Deadlock

New Delhi: The first week of the Monsoon session of Parliament concluded without executing major legislative business as ongoing confrontations between the Union Government and opposition parties forced repeated adjournments in both Houses. The parliamentary deadlock stems from opposition demands for the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan prior to initiating a formal floor debate on the NEET paper leak controversy.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition’s stance, arguing that setting preconditions and making excuses delays crucial discussions and sends a negative message to the nation. Rijiju emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged new anti-paper leak legislation alongside fast-track court mechanisms. He noted that while several lawmakers expressed a desire to debate examination reforms, opposition members continued shouting slogans, leading to repeated floor disruptions.

Despite the persistent uproar, minor legislative actions were processed during the week. In the Lok Sabha, the government introduced a bill to replace an executive ordinance raising the number of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, which must be passed into law before the session concludes on August 13 to avoid expiry. In the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to penalize deliberate disrespect or disruption toward the rendition of the national song, Vande Mataram.

With Question Hour disrupted for most of the week, proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned until Monday morning.
