Jholungey: Eight workers have lost their lives following a catastrophic structural collapse at an under-construction hydroelectric project in the Namchi district of Sikkim. The disaster occurred at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project site located near Samardung in Jholungey, where a massive landslide breached the structure and completely sealed the tunnel entrance. Emergency response teams rushed to the location to initiate rescue protocols, though hazardous underground conditions have significantly hindered recovery operations.
Roughly 27 project personnel were trapped inside the subterranean shaft when the surrounding hillside gave way. Search and rescue efforts have encountered severe obstacles due to suspected toxic gas emanating from disturbed underground rock formations. Several first responders reported dizziness and loss of consciousness while attempting to navigate the compromised tunnel shaft, forcing specialized units to adjust rescue tactics and deploy advanced ventilation equipment to clear the hazardous air inside.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a direct briefing with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to evaluate the ongoing emergency response and assess regional resource requirements. Chief Minister Tamang confirmed that the federal government pledged full logistical and technical backing to support local disaster management authorities. Rescue operations remain ongoing as specialized crews work through hazardous environmental conditions to reach the remaining trapped personnel.
