New Delhi: Delhi Police issued an official statement on Thursday clarifying that the recent order authorizing the Delhi Police Commissioner to exercise preventive detention powers under the National Security Act (NSA) is a routine quarterly extension and not a special measure introduced to suppress ongoing student demonstrations. Law enforcement officials addressed reports circulating on social media, dismissing claims that the order was specifically requested or issued to target the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak.
According to the clarification, the order represents a standard administrative procedure that is conventionally renewed every three months. The police specified that the current renewal was formally approved on July 7, 2026, for the period covering July 19 to October 18, 2026—a timeline that predates the escalation of the CJP street demonstrations in the national capital. Officials maintained that no special request was initiated in connection with recent events and stated that the administrative notification had been misinterpreted out of context.
The clarification comes amidst public discussion regarding the timing of the official gazette notification, which was published on July 22 during peak protest activity. Delhi Police reiterated that the routine administrative exercise does not alter standard law-and-order protocols, urging the public and media outlets to rely on official channels to avoid spreading misleading information.
