New Delhi: Cyber fraud cases across India nearly tripled over a five-year period, rising from 10,395 reported incidents in 2020 to 29,758 in 2024, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Presenting National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data in a written response, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar outlined the steady upward trajectory of digital financial crimes, with Telangana registering the highest concentration of cases among all states and union territories.
According to the official statistics, national cyber fraud figures rose from 10,395 in 2020 to 14,007 in 2021, reaching 17,470 in 2022, 19,466 in 2023, and peaking at 29,758 in 2024. Among specific fraud categories monitored in 2024, online banking fraud accounted for the largest share with 4,659 incidents, followed by credit and debit card fraud at 3,829 cases, investment and marketing scams at 3,044, ATM-related fraud at 1,659, and vishing calls at 1,264. Newer categories introduced into tracking frameworks in 2024 also recorded notable numbers, including gaming platform fraud at 1,019 cases, OTP theft at 965, and e-wallet or UPI fraud at 723.
Geographical breakdowns revealed that Telangana led the country in 2024 with 18,922 recorded cases, followed by Bihar with 4,020, Maharashtra with 2,827, and Odisha with 1,546. While the NCRB does not maintain centralized figures regarding total monetary losses or recoveries, the Ministry of Home Affairs highlighted ongoing institutional efforts to counter digital financial crime through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS). The minister reported that the emergency reporting mechanism had successfully blocked and saved over 11,158 crore rupees across more than 32.8 lakh individual complaints up to June 30, 2026.
